NEW YORK – July 29, 2008 – INNODATA ISOGEN, INC., (NASDAQ: INOD), a leading provider of knowledge process outsourcing as well as publishing and related information technology services, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Project MUSE – one of the world’s largest collections of online scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences – to convert both current and legacy journal issues into XML.
Project MUSE is a joint collaboration of the Johns Hopkins University Press and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University. Under the terms of the agreement, Innodata Isogen will provide data conversion services, including XML encoding and enrichment, for most of Project MUSE’s journals. The company estimates that the total engagement will be worth approximately $600,000 in the first year, while the ongoing conversion of new journals could generate between $150,000 and $200,000 in annual revenue, depending on volumes.
“One of our more important goals is to introduce more flexibility in the way we present MUSE journal content,” said Mary Rose Muccie, director, Project MUSE. “Innodata Isogen’s expertise in all aspects of data conversion and XML encoding has allowed us to look at our online content in new ways. We’ve also been impressed by their responsiveness and ability to meet or beat our deadlines for delivering electronic files.”
Founded in 1993, Project MUSE is an online repository of humanities and social sciences journals that provides subscribing libraries with access to articles from more than 350 journals from 80 scholarly publishers.
“We’ve already helped dozens of commercial publishers meet the increasing demands of their readers to access digital content,” said Bob Kidd, vice president of Innodata Isogen’s publishing practice. “We’re excited by the opportunity to translate the best practices we’ve developed for those publications to not-for-profit organizations like Project MUSE as we help them improve their ability to meet the needs of their subscribers.”
About Project Muse
MUSE began in 1993 as a pioneering joint project of the Johns Hopkins University Press and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at JHU. Grants from the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities allowed MUSE to go live with JHU Press journals in 1995. Journals from other publishers were first incorporated in 2000 and additional university press and scholarly society publishers have joined in each subsequent year. Today, MUSE is still a not-for-profit collaboration between the participating publishers and MSEL, with the goal of disseminating quality scholarship via a sustainable model that meets the needs of both libraries and publishers. Project MUSE subscriptions are available only to institutions.
