January 20th, 2004 - The Bergen Record runs a feature on Innodata Isogen's work with the Smithsonian Institution. Interviewed for the piece were Martin Kalfatovic, Digital Projects Historian at the Smithsonian, and our own Peter B. Kaufman.
"Fragile, yellowed documents are given a new lease on life when digital images of the relics are posted on the Internet by Hackensack-based Innodata Isogen." reads the story, continuing, "On Wednesday, the company's latest effort - the digitization of 15,000 images for the Smithsonian Institution Libraries - will be unveiled in a Web site documenting a Pacific exploration mission that sent 346 men on six vessels to exotic lands such as Fiji and Hawaii from 1838-1842. The United States Exploring Expedition (USExEx), which was documented last year in Nathaniel Philbrick's book "Sea of Glory," is considered a major achievement by historians and scientists."
"We do a lot of digitization work but this one is really extraordinary," said Peter Kaufman, manager of business solutions at Innodata Isogen. "It's an important part of history that hasn't been told to the broad public."
