NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 2000--INNODATA CORPORATION (NASDAQ: INOD), a leading provider of digital content outsourcing services, announced today the appointment of Dr. Charles F. Goldfarb to its Board of Directors. Goldfarb invented the SGML language and later led the team that developed it into an International Standard. He is considered to be one of the most influential shapers of the Internet and is a widely published authority on XML.
HTML and XML are based upon SGML. HTML is an SGML application, while XML is a Web-optimized subset of SGML. SGML is commonly used to create and manage massive amounts of documentation for a diverse range of applications ranging from aircraft documentation to nuclear plants. Industry experts believe that XML is destined to replace HTML as the standard format for Web applications and have heralded XML as the key technology behind the move to the Internet as the computing platform of the future.
Jack Abuhoff, President and CEO, said, "Innodata is extremely fortunate to be in a position to benefit from Dr. Goldfarb's extraordinary vision. Dr. Goldfarb is a luminary in our field. He is the father of SGML and XML - which is at the core of our growth strategy - and is a subset of SGML. Dr. Goldfarb will provide us with a level of vision and guidance that will be instrumental as we move forward on our strategy to be the leading provider of digital content outsourcing services. The appointment of Dr. Goldfarb reflects Innodata's commitment to assemble a team of leaders and visionaries from the Internet, media, and business worlds that will help propel us and guide us in these exciting times. We are extraordinarily pleased to have been able to attract such outstanding new leadership for our Board of Directors."
Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Goldfarb stated, "I am excited to be joining the Innodata team at what I perceive as an early stage in its development. I look forward to having a hand in Innodata's strategic direction and being a guiding element in its future."
Dr. Goldfarb invented SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) in 1974 and later led the team that developed it into the International Standard (ISO 8879) on which the World Wide Web's HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and XML (Extensible Markup Language) are based. He has served as Editor of the SGML International Standard for 20 years, and is a consultant to developers of SGML and XML applications and products.
Dr. Goldfarb is co-author of The XML Handbook(TM) Third Edition (Prentice-Hall, 2001), the first edition of which was rated the top XML book of 1998 by Amazon.com. He also authored The SGML Handbook(TM) (Oxford University Press, 1990), cited by Seybold Report as the definitive reference on SGML, and The SGML Buyer's Guide: A Unique Guide to Determining Your Requirements and Choosing the Right SGML and XML Products and Services (Prentice-Hall, 1998). He is Series Editor of Prentice-Hall's Charles F. Goldfarb Series on Open Information Management and The Definitive XML Series from Charles F. Goldfarb. He has been profiled in Forbes, Web Techniques, Red Herring, and other publications.
He holds the Graphic Communications Association's first International SGML Award and the Printing Industries of America's Gutenberg Award. The Society for Technical Communication named him and Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web, STC Honorary Fellows in 1999. This status is conferred annually by STC to an individual or individuals who have achieved eminence and influenced the practice of technical communication. In 1986, Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while employed at the European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN) and thereby pioneered global information sharing via hypermedia. Only twice since the award's creation has STC named more than one Honorary Fellow. The synergy between the contributions of Goldfarb and Berners-Lee led the Society to recognize them both in one year.
Goldfarb is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Columbia College.
