eBooks

For years, eBook sales have failed to line-up with the lofty visions of industry observers, one of whom predicted that eBooks would become a $25 billion market by 2008. But now as sales of eBooks are expected to double from 2005 to 2007 — from $15 million to $30 million — many leading players in e-commerce and publishing are making plans to take advantage of this market’s potential.

At the same time, tremendous uncertainty about the types of eBook devices continues to dominate the marketplace. Will mobile devices, as expected, take the lion’s share, or will most eBooks be purchased for consumption on PCs and laptops? Instead of waiting for these issues to be resolved, publishers can take steps now to get ready by converting content to XML, streamlining workflows and building robust, flexible content repositories that can be repurposed to support a range of innovative content offerings.

Our white paper, "A Post-Hype Playbook: Compete to Win in the eBook Marketplace", offers a primer on why eBooks may finally be ready to become a viable market for publishers and details the steps publishers can take to convert current and future titles into eBook ready formats and develop cogent business plans for competing successfully in a digital marketplace that includes eBooks.
