Short for Darwin Information Typing Architecture, DITA enables controlled local specialization of XML document types in a way that preserves the ability to interchange information objects with other DITA users and with different DITA-aware applications and processors.

But even though DITA is clearly a major step forward for companies considering the adoption of XML, it is not a panacea for all content management problems. As an out-of-the-box solution, DITA is still too general to satisfy the requirements of most users, especially authors and many core DITA types require specialization to be made useful and sensible. In addition, deploying DITA does not change the fact that organizations will require business-specific authoring, content management and publishing systems.

Now that DITA has officially been accepted as an information standard by OASIS, many software companies are starting to provide tools with "out-of-the-box" functionality to support DITA. However, few of these tools satisfy all specific requirements for an organization. Therefore, many companies still need to review their content models and, as in any other XML development, plan for ways to develop and maintain their authoring, management and publishing infrastructures.

Four Roadblocks in the Fast Lane to DITA Success

In particular, many companies need to watch out for four common roadblocks that often plague companies trying to deploy new XML-based content management systems:

  • Inefficient processes
  • Organizational boundaries
  • Technology limitations
  • Inadequate resource utilization
