When The New Yorker began planning to transform 80 years of magazines into a massive eight DVD set, The Complete New Yorker, they knew that they would need to make those issues fully searchable by capturing the data stored on some 1.5 million index cards. To capture the data accurately and economically, they turned to Innodata Isogen. Our teams created an electronic “card catalog” of millions of citations and cross references that enabled readers to search for articles and even comics by topic.
Like all publishers, trade book and consumer magazine publishers are trying to come to grips with the changing landscape of new content delivery systems like eBooks, RSS feeds, blogs and podcasts.
With this challenge, however, also comes opportunity. For example, while magazine publishers face the prospect of receiving lower revenues from traditional advertising sources, they are also using their web sites and e-mail to reach new customers and create additional sources of revenue by monetizing small chunks of content.
And as trade book publishers face increasing threats from the online sale of used books and web sites that may duplicate content from older titles, they can also tap new revenue streams by digitizing their backlists to create demand for out-of-print books, dramatically extending their shelflife.
Innodata Isogen can help trade and consumer publishers respond to both challenges. To compete in the digital age, publishers need to adopt XML-based publishing systems and content repositories, the building blocks for large-scale content repurposing and digitization efforts. With our expertise in XML and content management systems, we can help publishers make this transition, enabling them to pursue new revenue streams, streamline operations, minimize production costs and improve their competitive standing.
For example, we helped a leading consumer magazine create a database that greatly enhances reader's ability to search through a special publication containing 80 years' worth of magazines. We’re also working with a leading publisher to digitize books from their backlist to expand access to new and out-of-print titles that can be viewed and searched on-line, printed on-demand or purchased for download.
